Minor Ailment Scheme

Minor Ailment Scheme

The minor ailment scheme* is an NHS service that allows the pharmacy to supply advice and medication where appropriate by the pharmacy for a group of minor conditions. The service is free of charge for eligible patients.
The aim of the service is to provide treatments for minor conditions without the need to see your GP or A&E. You do not require an appointment for this service. You are however, required to be registered with a local GP in the same area as the pharmacy providing this service.
The pharmacist will conduct a short consultation with you to establish the best course of treatment and provide expert advice for you. In more serious cases, the pharmacist might refer you to the GP or the A&E as appropriate.
Conditions covered by this NHS service vary by area but may include:
Hayfever Threadworm
Cough and cold Nappy rash
Eczema Mouth Ulcers
Diarrhoea Headache
Headlice Bites and Stings
Conjunctivitis Ear Ache
Heartburn and Indigestion Cystitis
Thrush Sore throat
Please visit your local Avicenna pharmacy for a list of conditions covered in your local area and for more information on eligibility for this service.
*If you are under 16 or over 60 years of age, hold an NHS exemption certificate or receive certain benefits you may be able to receive treatment free of charge. NHS charges apply for other patients but may still be a cost-effective solution. You will be required to answer some questions about your health and other medical conditions before receiving any treatment.
